Robert’s wife, Jean Armour, appears to have been a remarkably tolerant woman, not only appearing to “turn a blind eye” to his many affairs but also taking in and raising some of his children by other women as if they were her own.

In “Come Back Hame Tae Me” Jean brings Burns many failings to his attention, but nevertheless entreats him to come back to her after he has settled his business in Edinburgh.
