“Encounters” (Excerpt) Gibb\Walsh
Edinburgh towards the end of the eighteenth century was a sophisticated and in some circles extremely “mannered” society. Etiquette and “correctness” were paramount if ones place in society were to be maintained.
On 4th of December 1787 Robert Burns attended a tea party hosted by Miss Erskine Nimmo. During that party he was politely introduced to Mrs Agnes McLehose. This introduction was to have a profound effect on both of their lives, and to leave the world one of its greatest love songs “Ae Fond Kiss”
In “Encounters” both Nancy and Robert reflect upon each other, while being aware of the restraints that society might place upon them.
