“Mine” (Excerpt) Gibb\Walsh
In December 1791 Nancy’s maid Jenny Clow was dying of tuberculosis. Before visiting Nancy for the last time Burns visited Jenny who had borne him a son after he had seduced her three years previously. His intention was to take the child and raise him as his own. However Burns was surprised to discover that Jenny had already made other arrangements and the boy, Robert Burns-Clow was to be looked after by a couple known to Jenny who had no children of their own.
In “Mine” Jenny sings of the pride and the love she feels for the son she’s known for so little time.
Robert Burns-Clow grew up to be a successful and prosperous man, completely justifying Jenny’s brave decision.
