Despite the fact that Nancy returned to Edinburgh only six months after she had left for Jamaica in February 1792, she and Burns never met again, though they did exchange further letters. The effect that Burns had on her life however, was obviously profound.

On 6th December 1831 - 40 years to the day after they last met - she wrote in her journal :

”This day I never can forget. Parted with Burns, in the year 1791, never more to meet in this world, Oh may we meet in Heaven.”

“Forty Years On” sees Nancy reflecting further on these thoughts.
