Burns sent Nancy “Ae Fond Kiss” a few days after their last meeting in Edinburgh and captured the feelings of their lost love in a way that has echoed over the centuries.

The tune used here is Rory Dall’s Port. This is the tune that Burns had in mind when he wrote the words and displays a beautiful symmetry, arguably, more in keeping with the sentiments of the lyrics than the tune that is more popular today.

With the tune divided into two distinct sections, Burns starts with “Ae Fond Kiss....” using the first section but ends by repeating the “Ae Fond Kiss...” verse using the second section of the tune. And so the musical circle is complete.
